Wants to Be Touched

Nokia is set to charm the world with an absolute stunner of a phone. The new concept, christened Nokia Aeon, when launched for real is also being dubbed the iPhone Killer, for reasons very obvious.

Nokia Aeon phone photo

The Aeon concept shown by Nokia has the keypad making way for a touchscreen and is extremely thin. Though it looks super delicate, it is believed that the Nokia Aeon will have all that needs to beat the Apple iPhone in a tough market, worldwide. The Finnish phone behemoth has reiterated that the Aeon is still in the design as R&D progresses fast.
If Nokia really manages to come out with a phone that resembles the design of the Aeon, it has the potential to really become the aspirational phone, instead of the iPhone. Apple is not a major power in the cell phone market outside US despite the iPhone being available in many countries now. On the other hand, Nokia is. All they need is a brilliant product, and the Nokia Aeon looks like it can do that. As you can see from the photos on this page, it is easy to fall in love with.

Nokia Aeon concept phone photo

Nokia has already released images of the Aeon concept and the pictures say that the device would sport two touch-sensitive panels mounted on a fuel-cell power pack. (Fuel cell – ignore that. In your dreams!) The touch-screen displays control all the keys that are virtual. The Aeon continues with Nokia’s recent ventures that all of which follow the wearable technology vision. Going by the images of the Nokia Aeon concept, it may be believed that the phone could be worn as a badge or as part of the wrist-strap.
Technology experts have started hailing the innovation going on at the Finnish phone maker’s R&D division, terming it as a big step in a world where Apple’s iPhone holds sway. They have opined that “it is nice that at least one manufacturer is apparently keeping up with Apple” and that “the whole world would be glad to see a realistic alternative the iPhone”.
Though the phone maker has not let out a date for the official launch of the Nokia Aeon, it is expected that when it actually does with all the spruce ups, it would be an event that would have the potential to give Apple’s iPhone a run for its money.

O2 sits on fence about iPhone unlocking

It seems O2 is throwing its toys out of the iPhone pram, and is sitting on the fence as to whether it will provide users with iPhone unlock codes to move to other networks.

Previously the network had refused to unlock handsets based on the grounds that it had an exclusive deal with Apple. Now that deal has come to an end, it seems O2 isn’t too sure if it wants to allow its iPhone users to jump ship.Speaking to The Register, O2 said: “We did not offer unlocking at the end of a customer’s iPhone contract as we had the exclusive contract for the iPhone in the UK.

“Obviously, that situation has changed and we are currently working through what will happen.”

If O2 decides to stick to its guns, you’ll be forced to go down the unofficial unlocking route, or be stuck with a phone locked to the O2 network. We know the route we’d be likely to take...link

Sprint and Samsung unveil Jesus Phone lookalike * Alert * Print Dead ringe

CTIA Wireless This summer, Sprint and Samsung will offer a touchscreen wireless handheld that dares to compete with the Jesus Phone.
When Sprint president and CEO Dan Hesse unveiled the new Samsung Instinct during his keynote speech at CTIA Wireless this morning in Las Vegas, he didn't actually mention the Jesus Phone. But he didn't have to. The Samsung Instinct looks like this:

And this:

Nonetheless, Hesse insisted on calling the Samsung Instinct "truly unique".
You see, Dan Hesse believes that his new device - slated to hit the US sometime this summer - puts the iPhone to shame. "This device is like no other touch-screen phone. Period. None are faster. None have more content pre-loaded."
Then he listed some of the Looks Like Jesus Phone's other attributes - and made another reference to speed.
"We'll make it easy-to-use, bringing applications and contacts within a single finger tap. We'll provide data at blazing speeds on our mobile broadband EVDO Rev A network. We'll offer applications that customers want: high-speed web access and entertainment services like music and TV. And some other things that others can't deliver, like GPS navigation and over-the-air downloads."
Hesse even went so far as to say that Sprint is the stuff of science fiction. "The end result is that the wireless company of the future exists now," he said. "Speed. Content. Industry leading applications. Simplicity. All of this will be available at a very competitive price this summer."...link

Samsung SOUL Dynamic Touch Phone

Samsung has released a new slider in Europe called Soul, its new flagship slider phone. Serving as the final bow for the Ultra Edition, it blends in a split-screen, context-sensitive touch control system similar to that of the LG Venus: rather than rely on fixed buttons or an entire front touch surface, the Soul includes a small touchscreen area whose buttons change depending on the immediate context for the screen above. When playing music, track controls replace normal commands, Samsung says in an example. The Soul is also the first Samsung handset to sport a themed UI where the entire look and sound can be replaced at once.

The handset is both very camera- and data-focused. A 5-megapixel camera is accompanied by a high-power LED flash as well as by face detection and image stabilization - all features normally reserved for some of the better dedicated cameras, the company says. Transfers are quick with 3G Internet access over HSDPA up to 7.2Mbps downstream; the phone supports North America with quad-band calling over GSM, though whether it also supports 3G in the Western region is unknown. The phone makes heavy use of Google features and supports built-in Gmail and search functions, including a dedicated button at the top level of the interface.

The 12.8mm (0.5in) thick phone is said to be music-savvy with AAC, FM radio, MP3, and WMA support, including protected WMA music stores. Bang & Olufsen's ICEpower audio enhancement technology is also onboard the Soul, which should be available first in Europe by April but is likely to see service in the US through AT&T if left in its current form.
Soul Specifications:
* Connectivity: quad band GSM/HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
* Display: 2.2" 16M color QVGA TFT
* Camera: 5 mpxwith autofocus, 4x digital zoom, face recognition, image stabilizer and WDR optimizer, power LED
